Eighteen-year-old Fleur Steen, a first-year medicine student at University of New England, has been awarded the $5,000 Real Futures Grant from Real Insurance to support her studies and advocacy for better rural healthcare. Growing up in regional communities around Toowoomba, Fleur was inspired to pursue medicine after witnessing the healthcare barriers faced by rural families, including members of her own family. The grant will help cover placement, travel, accommodation, textbooks, and professional development costs while allowing her to focus on research and health advocacy. Fleur is also active with Australian Medical Students' Association and is helping organise the 2026 Rural Health Summit in Armidale, which is expected to attract more than 200 students and healthcare professionals from across Australia.
