Cook Shire Council is launching a new water infrastructure project using a specially trained detection dog named Danny to locate hidden underground water leaks across regional communities. Starting in Cooktown this May, Danny and his handler will inspect large sections of the local water network before continuing surveys in Lakeland, Laura and Coen. Council representatives said the initiative aims to reduce water waste, lower long-term repair costs, and improve the reliability of essential infrastructure in remote areas. Danny is trained to detect treated water escaping from underground pipes, helping crews identify leaks before they become major pipe failures. Officials believe early leak detection will allow maintenance teams to plan repairs more efficiently while reducing service disruptions for residents. The project is also part of a wider community campaign encouraging households to regularly check for hidden leaks and conserve water.
