A Queensland parliamentary committee has recommended changes to proposed laws governing e-bikes and e-scooters, including easing controversial speed restrictions on shared pathways. The committee suggested the proposed 10km/h speed limit should apply only in high pedestrian areas rather than across all footpaths and shared paths. It also backed plans requiring riders to hold at least a learner’s licence and supported restrictions on riders under 16 years old, while recommending exemptions for people unable to obtain a licence but capable of safely operating an e-mobility device. The inquiry received more than 3,000 submissions as debate continues over safety concerns and the growing use of electric mobility devices across the state. Advocacy groups including Bicycle Queensland have criticised the proposed laws, arguing they fail to address the sale and use of unsafe high-powered devices.
