A bushfire near Oak Valley, in the Townsville region of Queensland, prompted an upgraded watch-and-act warning on Saturday, 3 October 2026, after authorities reported that the fire could threaten properties in surrounding areas.

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) deployed 17 fire crews, supported by two water-bombing helicopters, to assist with containment, backburning and monitoring. The warning applies to areas around Valley Drive, Thunderbolt Drive, Greta Road, Chisholm Trail and Kavenagh Court, where residents have been told to prepare to leave if conditions worsen.

A separate stay-informed alert was issued for Brookhill. Authorities warned that the fire could continue burning for several days, depending on weather conditions and firefighting progress.

The warning level has changed as crews assess the fire’s behaviour and its proximity to homes. Residents were urged to remain alert, monitor official emergency updates and be ready to follow evacuation instructions. People in affected areas were also advised to have essential items and emergency supplies prepared in case they need to leave quickly.

Additional fires were reported north of Townsville, including one near the Bruce Highway at Yabulu, where smoke was affecting visibility and traffic. Emergency services were assisting with traffic management, and motorists were advised to take care and consider alternative routes where necessary.

Another fire near Cape Cleveland Road was generating smoke close to the Australian Institute of Marine Science, although no properties were reported to be at risk from that blaze in the update.

Firefighters continue to monitor the affected areas and work to reduce the risk to nearby communities. Bushfires can change direction or intensify quickly, particularly when wind and dry vegetation contribute to fire spread. Residents should rely on official alerts for the latest information rather than approaching firegrounds to observe conditions.

The situation remains subject to change as emergency crews continue their operations. Residents in Oak Valley, Brookhill and nearby communities should follow instructions from emergency authorities and activate their bushfire survival plans if required.
