Northern Territory Police have released previously unseen footage of convicted murderer Bradley John Murdoch as part of a renewed effort to find the remains of British backpacker Peter Falconio, who disappeared in the Australian outback more than two decades ago.
The video shows Murdoch during his final weeks, when police made another attempt to obtain information about Falconio’s disappearance. Officers questioned Murdoch and appealed for his cooperation, hoping he would provide details that could help locate Falconio’s body. However, Murdoch continued to deny knowing where the remains were located.
Peter Falconio disappeared in July 2001 while travelling with his girlfriend Joanne Lees along the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek in the Northern Territory. Murdoch was later convicted of Falconio’s murder, as well as the assault and attempted abduction of Lees. Despite the conviction, Falconio’s body has never been found.
Police released the footage in the hope that someone who may have received information from Murdoch could come forward. Authorities said the search for Falconio’s remains remains an ongoing priority and that even small details could assist investigators.
Murdoch died in 2025 while serving a life sentence after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Before his death, he maintained his denial of involvement in Falconio’s disappearance and did not provide information about the location of the missing backpacker’s remains.
The release of the footage comes 25 years after the case shocked Australia and gained international attention. The disappearance of Falconio and the survival of Joanne Lees became one of the country’s most widely followed criminal investigations.
Northern Territory Police have continued efforts to solve the remaining mystery surrounding Falconio’s body. A reward has been offered for information leading to the discovery of his remains, with investigators hoping renewed public attention may generate new leads.
The case remains one of Australia’s most significant unsolved mysteries despite Murdoch’s conviction. Police have encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact authorities as they continue searching for answers and closure for Falconio’s family.
