South Australia Police are investigating whether a number of recent arson attacks and a shooting across Adelaide's northern suburbs are connected, with detectives examining whether organised crime groups involved in the illegal tobacco trade are behind the incidents. The investigation forms part of Operation Eclipse, a specialist police operation established to tackle violent crime associated with illicit tobacco businesses.

The latest incident occurred in the early hours of 3 July 2026, when two offenders wearing dark clothing and face coverings allegedly forced entry into a shopping complex at the corner of Bridge Road and Lincoln Crescent in Pooraka before deliberately setting the premises alight. The blaze destroyed the building, causing an estimated $1 million in damage and severely affecting several neighbouring businesses. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Among the businesses heavily damaged was Lazeez Market and Butchery, while an adjoining barber shop also sustained significant damage. A nearby medical centre escaped structural damage but temporarily lost power because of the fire. Firefighters spent several hours bringing the blaze under control while crime scene investigators examined the site.

Later the same morning, emergency services were called to Ferryden Park, where two vehicles were deliberately set on fire in separate incidents along York Terrace. Both vehicles were destroyed and two additional cars were damaged by the flames and flying debris. Police believe the vehicle fires are linked to the Pooraka shopping centre arson and are investigating whether both incidents form part of the same criminal activity.

Detectives are also examining whether these attacks are connected to a recent shooting that occurred elsewhere in Adelaide. While investigators have not publicly disclosed all operational details, they say the incidents share several characteristics that warrant further investigation. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that organised criminal groups are targeting businesses connected to the illicit tobacco market through intimidation and property damage.

As part of the investigation, police are appealing for public assistance. Detectives are seeking information about a white Mitsubishi Triton utility seen near the Pooraka shopping complex during the early morning hours before the fire. Motorists travelling through the area between 12:30am and 2:00am are being asked to review dashcam footage, while nearby residents and businesses are encouraged to check CCTV recordings that may assist investigators.

Operation Eclipse continues to investigate organised crime activities associated with the illegal tobacco trade across South Australia. Police say such criminal networks have increasingly resorted to violent tactics, including arson and other serious offences, in disputes over territory and illicit profits. Detectives are working with specialist forensic officers to determine whether additional incidents are linked to the current investigation.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the fires, the suspected vehicle or other suspicious activity to contact Crime Stoppers. Investigators say community assistance will be vital in identifying those responsible and preventing further attacks as the investigation continues.
