Smart summary

Police in western Sydney are investigating the fatal stabbing of a 36-year-old man in Mount Druitt after two teenage boys were charged in connection with the incident.
Emergency services were called to Cleeve Close shortly before 9 pm on Friday, 9 October, following reports of an assault. Officers arrived and found the man suffering from stab wounds to his torso. Police and paramedics attempted to assist him, but he died at the scene.
A homicide investigation was subsequently launched, with detectives examining the circumstances surrounding the death and working to identify those allegedly involved.
On Sunday evening, a 13-year-old boy attended Mount Druitt Police Station, where he was arrested. Police subsequently charged him with murder, breaching bail conditions and an unrelated robbery offence. Later that evening, officers arrested a second teenager, aged 16, at a residence in Cabramatta. He was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.
Both teenagers were refused bail and were scheduled to appear before a children's court on Monday, 12 October. Investigators believe the incident may have developed from an apparently ordinary interaction between the victim and a group of young people. According to police, the man was returning home from work when he stopped to speak with people he knew through family and friends.
Police said the man later withdrew money from an ATM to help the young people get home. Investigators allege that another group took offence to the interaction, leading to the confrontation that ended in the man's death.
Superintendent Darrin Batchelor described the circumstances as deeply distressing and said the initial investigation indicated the encounter had begun innocently. Detectives are continuing to establish the sequence of events and the alleged roles of the people involved.
Police have also appealed for information from members of the public who were in the area around the time of the stabbing. Investigators are particularly interested in CCTV recordings, mobile-phone footage, dashcam videos and accounts from anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it. A knife believed to have been used in the incident was reportedly recovered from a drain outside a unit block in Cabramatta.
Authorities have indicated that other people may have been involved and have encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers.
The case remains under investigation. The charges against the teenagers have not been proven in court, and both are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.
The investigation highlights the importance of witnesses and video evidence in helping police reconstruct serious incidents. Authorities are asking anyone with relevant information to come forward as detectives continue their inquiries into the death.
