A 14-year-old boy has been charged following a police investigation into a motorhome fire in Wallsend, in the Newcastle region of New South Wales. The incident left a 69-year-old man with serious injuries and raised concerns among residents in the local community.

According to NSW Police, the motorhome fire occurred shortly before 6am on Thursday, 29 October 2026, on Fogo Street, Wallsend. Emergency services were called after reports that a motorhome parked on the street was engulfed in flames.

When officers from Newcastle City Police District arrived, they were informed that a member of the public had helped rescue a 69-year-old man from the burning vehicle. The quick response of the bystander helped bring the man out of the motorhome before emergency services completed their response.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the injured man at the scene for burns. He was initially transported to John Hunter Hospital for medical treatment and was later airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. As reported on 5 November, he remained in a critical condition.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended the location and worked to extinguish the blaze. Despite their efforts, the motorhome was completely destroyed by the fire.

Following the incident, Newcastle City Police District established Strike Force Bahl to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blaze. Detectives conducted inquiries to identify those responsible and determine what happened before the fire started.

The investigation led police to a home in Wallsend on Thursday morning, 5 November. At approximately 8am, detectives, assisted by officers from the Northern Region Operations Support Group, arrested a 14-year-old boy.

The teenager was taken to Waratah Police Station, where he was charged with two offences: damaging property by fire or explosives valued at more than $15,000, and reckless grievous bodily harm.

Police confirmed that the boy was refused bail at the station. He subsequently appeared before a children's court on the same day, where bail was again refused. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, 13 November 2026.

The investigation has attracted attention because of the serious injuries suffered by the man and the destruction of the motorhome. The case also highlights the importance of witnesses and members of the public reporting information that may assist police investigations.

The teenager has been charged, but the allegations have not been proven in court. The legal process will determine the outcome of the case.
