A 47-year-old man has been charged following an alleged serious domestic violence assault on his partner at a home in south Canberra.

Police allege the incident occurred on 24 September 2026, when the man was inside the couple’s residence with his partner. According to police, the woman was allegedly assaulted during the incident, including being strangled and struck in the head multiple times. Police further allege that the man attempted to suffocate the woman and assaulted her with a belt.

The matter was subsequently reported to police, who began investigating the allegations. Detectives examined the circumstances surrounding the reported assault and continued inquiries before locating and arresting the 47-year-old man in Canberra’s City area on the evening of 6 October.

The man has now been charged with offences relating to the alleged assault. Police say the allegations involve serious acts of violence against his partner and are being treated as a domestic violence matter.

The arrest follows an investigation that began after authorities were made aware of the alleged incident. Domestic violence investigations can involve detailed inquiries into the circumstances of an assault, the relationship between the people involved and any available evidence that may help establish what occurred.

Police have not released the identity of the woman involved or provided further personal details about the relationship. Authorities have also not disclosed all evidence gathered during the investigation, as the matter is now before the legal system.

The allegations are serious, particularly because police claim the victim was subjected to multiple forms of physical violence during the incident. Strangulation and attempted suffocation are particularly dangerous forms of assault and can cause significant injury even when visible injuries are not immediately apparent.

The accused man will face court in connection with the charges. As the matter progresses, the court will consider the allegations and evidence presented by prosecutors. No finding of guilt has been made at this stage.

Police continue to encourage people experiencing domestic and family violence to seek help and report incidents to authorities. Anyone who believes they or another person is at immediate risk should contact emergency services.

The case also highlights the importance of reporting domestic violence and ensuring that allegations of serious assault are investigated promptly. Support services remain available to people experiencing violence or fearing for their safety.
