Clinton Gordon Sutcliffe, 39, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 22-year-old Dale Aaron McKenna following a high-speed pursuit on the Western Downs in May 2023. Justice Lincoln Crowley handed down the sentence in the Supreme Court of Queensland in Toowoomba, setting a non-parole period of 20 years. Sutcliffe will be eligible to apply for parole on May 30, 2043. In sentencing remarks, Justice Crowley said Sutcliffe's actions were driven by jealousy and anger and had caused profound and lasting harm to McKenna's family. Ten victim impact statements were presented to the court, describing the devastating consequences of the young man's death. The judge noted that Sutcliffe had shown no remorse and said he alone was responsible for the loss of a “loved and cherished family member.” The sentence brings to a close a case that deeply affected the Western Downs community and McKenna's family, who attended the proceedings throughout the trial.
