Smart summary
More than 100 cars and motorcycles joined a community gathering in Ellenbrook to show support for a 13-year-old boy allegedly attacked and threatened with a knife by a group of teenagers.
Residents of Ellenbrook, a suburb in the north-east of Perth, Western Australia, have come together to show their support for a 13-year-old boy who was allegedly assaulted and threatened with a knife by a group of teenagers.
The community organised a special motorcade featuring more than 100 cars and approximately 25 motorcycles. The event was arranged to demonstrate solidarity with the young victim and his family following the disturbing incident.
The gathering began at Coolamon Park before participants travelled together through the nearby area towards a local retail outlet. The event attracted a large number of residents, including people driving sports cars, SUVs and family vehicles.
The alleged assault occurred the previous weekend. According to reports presented in the Perth Children's Court, the victim was allegedly followed by a group of teenagers who demanded to know where a vape was. He was reportedly pushed to the ground, dragged, punched and kicked. The group allegedly threatened him with a knife and forced him to make derogatory statements. His T-shirt and jumper were also reportedly taken during the incident.
Following the alleged attack, the boy managed to walk home. He was later taken to Midland Hospital, where he received medical treatment for a concussion, multiple lumps on his head, black eyes and bruising across different parts of his body.
The incident was reportedly filmed and shared on social media, raising further concern among residents about youth violence and the safety of children in local neighbourhoods.
Local resident Terry Mason organised the community cruise after hearing about the incident. He said the situation was particularly concerning because a member of his own family had also experienced harassment in the area. He organised the gathering within approximately 12 hours, bringing together members of the local car and motorcycle community.
The response demonstrated how quickly residents could unite when a young person and their family needed support. Local Member of Parliament Tania Lawrence also welcomed the gathering, describing it as a unique way for the community to demonstrate that it stood behind the affected family.
Police have charged six teenagers, aged between 13 and 17, in connection with the alleged attack. A 14-year-old was among those charged, while another five teenagers were subsequently charged with offences including aggravated armed robbery and causing bodily harm. Investigations are continuing.
The community gathering has also renewed attention on the importance of preventing youth violence, protecting young people and encouraging residents to report threatening behaviour.
For Ellenbrook residents, the motorcade was more than a gathering of cars and motorcycles. It was a public demonstration of support for a young person and a message that violence against children should not be ignored.
The legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the allegations against the teenagers. All accused individuals are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.
