A 57-year-old man from Perth has been charged following an alleged assault involving an airline cabin crew member aboard a flight preparing to depart Perth Airport for Melbourne.

According to information released on 7 November 2026, the incident occurred on Friday, 6 November, while passengers were preparing for the journey. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) attended the airport after receiving a request for assistance from airline staff.

Police allege that the man became aggressive towards airline employees while seated in an emergency exit row. Cabin crew members reportedly observed his behaviour and became concerned about whether he was suitable to remain in that seat.

Under airline safety procedures, passengers seated in emergency exit rows must be able to follow crew instructions and assist during an emergency if required. After assessing the situation, cabin crew asked the passenger to move to another seat.

The situation allegedly escalated when the man attempted to retrieve his luggage from an overhead storage compartment. Police allege that he then pushed a cabin manager with both hands in the chest.

Another passenger reportedly stepped in to assist the cabin crew and restrained the man while airline staff managed the situation. The passenger subsequently left the aircraft after being directed to do so by airline employees.

AFP officers arrived at Perth Airport and arrested the 57-year-old man. Following the investigation, he was charged with one count of common assault under Western Australian criminal law.

The charge carries a maximum possible penalty of 18 months' imprisonment and/or a fine of $18,000. The man was scheduled to appear before Perth Magistrates Court on 7 November 2026.

The incident highlights the importance of maintaining safe and respectful behaviour during air travel. Cabin crew members are responsible not only for passenger comfort but also for enforcing safety procedures and responding to situations that could affect an aircraft's operation.

Airline employees must be able to carry out safety instructions without intimidation or physical interference. Passengers are also expected to follow crew directions, particularly when those instructions relate to emergency seating arrangements.

The AFP has encouraged travellers to remain alert and report suspicious or concerning behaviour at airports. Its airport safety campaign advises the public to observe, listen and report potential security concerns.

The investigation and court process will determine the legal outcome of the allegations. The man is charged with an offence, and the allegations have not been established as proven in court.
