Graduates attending recent ceremonies at Deakin University were left puzzled after discovering that envelopes handed out during their graduation celebrations did not contain their expected documents.
The issue emerged during graduation ceremonies held at Costa Hall, where some students reportedly opened their envelopes expecting to find official graduation papers only to find them empty.
According to Deakin University, the envelopes presented on stage were intended as ceremonial items rather than the official degree documents themselves. The university explained that graduates receive their formal documentation separately through established distribution processes.
Deakin's graduation procedures state that official graduation documents, including testamurs and academic records, are managed separately from the ceremony presentation process. Graduates can also access digital academic documentation through the university's online systems.
The incident generated discussion among graduates and families who had expected the envelopes handed out during the ceremony to contain official certificates. While the mix-up caused some confusion, the university reassured students that their graduation status and academic records were unaffected.
Graduation ceremonies this week form part of Deakin's June 2026 graduation round, held at Costa Hall in Geelong. Thousands of students are participating in ceremonies across multiple faculties.
University representatives clarified that graduates would continue to receive their official documents through the normal channels and that the issue related only to the presentation envelopes used during the ceremony.
