A fatal crash on Queensland’s Southern Downs has claimed a second life after an 85-year-old Wallangarra woman died from critical injuries sustained in a rollover on the New England Highway at Glen Aplin near Stanthorpe. Emergency services were called to the crash scene shortly before 2pm on May 9 after an MG SUV swerved off the highway, rolled multiple times, and struck a power pole. Police say the driver took evasive action after an oncoming vehicle allegedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road. A 92-year-old male passenger died at the scene, while the elderly woman was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries before being airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where she later died. The 20-year-old female driver suffered minor injuries. Police allege the other vehicle involved, a gold Nissan Maxima, failed to stop after the incident. Authorities later located the vehicle and its owner following a public appeal, with investigations continuing.
