The family of Nic Bryant, a 25-year-old rigger who died following a workplace accident at a construction site in Wollongong, has publicly thanked the first responders whose efforts gave them precious time to be with him before his death.

Nic was critically injured in May while working at a construction site. NSW Ambulance paramedics responded rapidly, stabilising him at the scene before he was transported to St George Hospital in Sydney for specialist treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he died three days later from his injuries.

Weeks after the tragedy, Nic's family visited the paramedics from Fairy Meadow Ambulance Station who attended the incident. The emotional reunion gave both the family and emergency responders an opportunity to reflect on the events of that day and the care provided during Nic's final hours. According to the family, the actions of the paramedics allowed them to spend valuable time with Nic, say their goodbyes, and make the important decision to donate his organs.

Nic's sister, Amber Bryant, said the family has found comfort knowing that his generosity continues to help others. Through organ donation, Nic's heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas have gone on to improve or save the lives of four people. She said that while the family's grief remains profound, knowing others have been given a second chance has provided meaning during an incredibly difficult time.

For the attending paramedics, reunions with the families of patients are uncommon but deeply meaningful. NSW Ambulance representatives said such meetings provide emotional closure for emergency crews who often never learn what happens to patients after they leave the scene. The reunion highlighted the lasting human connection between emergency responders and the people they serve.

The Bryant family also used the opportunity to encourage Australians to discuss organ donation with their loved ones and register their wishes. Ahead of Donate Life Week, they said having clear conversations about organ donation can make difficult decisions easier for families during times of crisis.

The story has resonated across the Illawarra community, not only because of the tragic workplace accident but also because it highlights the dedication of paramedics, hospital staff and organ donation teams who work together to support families in their darkest moments.

While Nic Bryant's life was cut tragically short, his family hopes his legacy will continue through the lives he has helped save and by inspiring more Australians to consider becoming organ donors. They said the compassion shown by first responders and healthcare workers will never be forgotten.
