Early works have begun on an almost $4 million upgrade of Old Maitland Road at Hexham, addressing a section of the road that has been vulnerable to flooding.

The project is focused on improving the reliability and resilience of the important road connection while reducing the impact of flooding on motorists and the surrounding community.

Initial work has now commenced, with major construction expected to begin in September 2026. The upgrade is part of ongoing investment in Newcastle and the wider Hunter region's transport infrastructure.

Old Maitland Road is an important route through the Hexham area, connecting communities and providing access to surrounding industrial and residential areas. Flooding can disrupt traffic and create significant challenges for motorists, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The upgrade is intended to improve the road's ability to cope with flooding and provide a safer and more dependable transport connection.

The project also reflects the importance of investing in infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather and changing environmental conditions. Flood-prone roads can require repeated maintenance and can become difficult or dangerous to use when water levels rise.

For Newcastle and the wider Hunter community, improvements to Old Maitland Road are expected to provide longer-term benefits by improving road resilience and reducing disruption caused by flooding.

With early works already underway, motorists travelling through Hexham should expect construction activity as the project progresses. Major construction is scheduled to commence in September.
