The Supreme Court of Queensland in Cairns has found John Yalu guilty of manslaughter over the death of pensioner Kalman Tal, who died after a leg amputation carried out with a circular saw in Innisfail in February 2022. The court heard Mr Tal had allegedly suffered long-term leg pain and had offered cash to several people in the weeks before his death seeking an amputation. Prosecutors argued the act amounted to murder, while the defence maintained Yalu did not intend to cause grievous bodily harm. Following deliberations, the jury returned a unanimous verdict of manslaughter but acquitted Yalu of murder. He is expected to face sentencing on Monday.
