Flood evacuees from the remote Northern Territory communities of Palumpa and Nauiyu, also known as Daly River, have raised concerns about their treatment while staying at emergency accommodation in Batchelor. The residents have been housed at the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education since severe flooding forced them from their homes in March. Evacuees, including James Parry, say private security guards have been conducting bag and vehicle searches and questioning residents about alcohol consumption whenever they enter or leave the site. Some residents say these practices have made them feel racially profiled and treated “like prisoners.” Aboriginal Peak Organisations Northern Territory and the Northern Land Council have also expressed concern, reporting that some support staff were denied access to the evacuation centre. Additional social work students are being deployed to assist residents, while authorities continue planning for the eventual return of evacuees to their communities once conditions allow.
