A former employee of Cairns bridal store Jonovia Bridal is facing the possibility of a prison sentence after pleading guilty to fraud-related offences involving customers who were waiting for wedding dresses.

Dominique Marianne Rolland, aged 53, appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to charges including dishonestly causing financial detriment to customers and dishonestly applying a wedding dress belonging to another person for her own use. The matter has now been referred to the Cairns District Court for sentencing.

The court heard that the alleged offending occurred while Rolland was employed at Jonovia Bridal between June 2021 and July 2023. Police said the case involved a number of customers who had paid money for wedding dresses but were later left without the products they expected.

According to police, the case involved 75 complainants, including 62 brides, one debutante and family members who had contributed financially towards dresses. The total financial detriment involved was reported to be more than $121,000.

The court heard allegations that customers were repeatedly given misleading information about dress orders, delivery times and progress updates. Prosecutors said Rolland became involved in dishonest communications with customers and was a willing participant in the practices by 2023.

One example presented in court involved a bride receiving a replacement dress made using store curtains just days before her wedding. Prosecutors said the situation caused significant emotional distress for customers who were preparing for one of the most important days of their lives.

Police told the court that the store owner, Alison Davies, was considered the main person responsible for the alleged conduct, while Rolland was described as a participant in the business practices. Rolland was also discharged from 70 additional fraud-related charges.

Rolland’s defence lawyer told the court that her client had no previous criminal history and had been respected in her current administrative employment. The defence also highlighted an occasion where Rolland personally paid thousands of dollars to help a bride obtain a replacement dress after problems with an order.

However, Magistrate Terence Browne said the seriousness of the offending meant the matter needed to be handled in a higher court. The magistrate indicated sentencing could involve a significant penalty, including possible imprisonment.

The case has attracted attention because wedding businesses often involve large deposits paid months before ceremonies, leaving customers vulnerable when orders are not fulfilled.

For many affected brides, the issue was not only financial but emotional, as wedding preparations were disrupted during a highly significant period of their lives. The court previously heard that the alleged conduct created stress and anxiety for customers who expected their dresses to arrive on time.

The matter will continue in the Cairns District Court on September 21, 2026, where sentencing will be considered.
