Communities across parts of northern Victoria are being urged to remain alert as the Goulburn River continues to rise following recent rainfall, with authorities warning that river levels could exceed the minor flood threshold in some locations. Emergency services are closely monitoring conditions as additional rain is forecast across the region.
According to Vic Emergency, elevated river levels have been recorded along sections of the Goulburn River, particularly near Seymour and downstream towards Shepparton. While widespread flooding is not currently expected, authorities say low-lying areas, riverbanks and some local access roads may be affected if water levels continue to increase.
Emergency officials have advised campers and visitors along the Goulburn River between Goulburn Weir and Shepparton to move to higher ground and avoid camping close to the river's edge. Water releases from Goulburn Weir, combined with recent rainfall, are expected to contribute to higher river levels over the coming days.
Several nearby waterways are also experiencing elevated levels. Minor flooding has been reported along Seven Creeks in parts of the region, with authorities continuing to monitor conditions at Euroa, Strathbogie and Kialla West. Forecast rainfall may result in further rises across these waterways, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding in low-lying areas.
Emergency services are reminding residents not to drive, walk or ride through floodwater, as conditions can change rapidly and hidden hazards may be present beneath the surface. Drivers are encouraged to obey road closure signs and check local traffic updates before travelling, particularly in rural areas where low bridges and access roads may become submerged.
Authorities are also encouraging property owners in flood-prone locations to review their emergency plans, monitor official weather forecasts and prepare for the possibility of changing conditions. Farmers are being advised to consider moving livestock, machinery and equipment to higher ground if necessary.
Although the current warnings relate mainly to minor flooding, officials stress that river levels can rise quickly if additional heavy rainfall occurs. Emergency agencies continue to assess conditions and will issue updated advice if flood risks increase or evacuation measures become necessary.
The Goulburn River catchment has experienced several flooding events in recent years, highlighting the importance of preparedness during periods of sustained rainfall. Authorities say community awareness and timely action remain essential for reducing risks to people, property and infrastructure. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official emergency channels and follow instructions from local authorities. By remaining prepared and monitoring updates, communities can respond more effectively should river conditions worsen in the coming days.
