The Hay Lions Football Club is celebrating 150 years of Australian rules football in Hay, marking one of the oldest continuous football traditions in regional New South Wales. Originally formed in 1876 during a meeting at the Royal Hotel in Hay, the club has survived league collapses, restructures and decades of change while remaining central to the Riverina community. Over the years the club competed under different identities and across multiple regional leagues before becoming the Hay Lions in the early 1980s. The club’s history includes its first senior premiership in 1982 and a memorable 1992 season when the Lions won premierships in seniors, reserves and thirds under captain-coach Dennis Dunstan. The anniversary celebrations recognise not only sporting achievements but also the role the club has played in uniting generations of the Hay community.
