Residents of Katanning and surrounding communities in Western Australia's Great Southern region have been advised that the local airport will temporarily close for approximately one month to allow essential infrastructure improvements.

The closure is scheduled to begin on 16 November 2026. The work will focus on repairing sections of the airport's runway pavement and repainting runway markings to improve the condition and safety of the facility.

The airport plays an important role in supporting regional aviation services, particularly emergency medical transport. It provides access for aircraft operated by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), which helps people living in regional and remote communities receive urgent medical assistance.

The planned closure has therefore required careful coordination between the local shire, emergency services, St John Ambulance and the regional hospital.

Katanning Shire President Kristy D'Aprile said arrangements were being made to ensure that patients requiring urgent air transfers would continue to receive medical support during the closure.

Under the temporary arrangements, patients requiring emergency air transport will be transferred through alternative airports at Kojonup or Wagin.

These arrangements are intended to maintain access to emergency aviation services while maintenance work is carried out at Katanning Airport.

For regional communities, reliable airport infrastructure is particularly important because some medical emergencies require patients to be transported to larger hospitals outside their local area. The RFDS provides an essential service by helping people access specialist treatment that may not be available nearby.

Airport runway surfaces require regular maintenance because cracks, worn pavement and damaged markings can create safety risks for aircraft. Repairing these areas helps maintain the operational reliability of regional airports.

The repainting of runway markings is another important part of the project. Clear markings help pilots identify runway boundaries and other important operational areas when taking off and landing.

The planned improvements are being completed ahead of the summer period, when regional communities may experience increased travel and emergency service requirements.

Although the temporary closure may create some inconvenience, the shire has been working with relevant organisations to minimise disruption and ensure alternative arrangements are available.

Residents who may require medical transport during the closure are encouraged to follow advice from healthcare professionals and emergency service providers.

The project highlights the importance of maintaining regional infrastructure to support public safety, healthcare access and reliable transport services.

Katanning Airport remains an important facility for the local community, and the planned runway improvements are intended to support its continued operation after the maintenance period.
