A 19-year-old Mackay man has been told to "wake up to yourself" after pleading guilty to repeatedly breaching a police banning notice that prohibited him from entering venues in the Mackay Safe Night Precinct. The warning came from Magistrate Damien Dwyer during proceedings in the Mackay Magistrates Court, where the teenager admitted to ignoring restrictions imposed following earlier alcohol-related behaviour.

The court heard that Nayte John Wood was issued with a banning notice on 10 May 2026, preventing him from entering businesses within the Mackay Safe Night Precinct. Despite the restriction, he attempted to enter the Gallery Lounge and Bar on 6 June 2026 at about 2:30am. Security staff scanned his identification at the entrance and discovered that the ban was still active, refusing him entry.

Later, on 20 June, Wood voluntarily attended Mackay Police Station to speak with officers about the incident. He admitted he had been drinking alcohol that night and believed his banning notice had expired before he tried to enter the venue. However, police confirmed the ban was still in force at the time of the attempted entry.

During sentencing, Magistrate Dwyer noted that this was not the teenager's first breach of similar restrictions. The court was told Wood had engaged in comparable behaviour earlier in the year, prompting the magistrate to express concern that he was developing a pattern of alcohol-related offending.

Addressing the young man directly, Magistrate Dwyer warned that unless he changed his behaviour, the consequences would become increasingly serious. He told Wood he was "on a slippery slope to nowhere" and urged him to "wake up to yourself." The magistrate also commented that if he could not control his drinking, he should stop consuming alcohol altogether.

The court heard Wood had already accumulated approximately $2,500 in fines from previous offending. Taking into account his guilty plea, Magistrate Dwyer imposed a further $500 fine and recorded a conviction. The sentence was intended to reinforce the importance of complying with police banning notices and discourage future offending.

Wood told the court he intended to "pull his act together" and indicated he wanted to improve his behaviour. The magistrate acknowledged the statement but stressed that future actions, rather than promises, would determine whether he remained out of further legal trouble.

Queensland Police use Safe Night Precinct banning notices to reduce alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour in entertainment districts. People who receive these notices are prohibited from entering designated venues for a specified period, and breaching the conditions is an offence under Queensland law.

Authorities continue to encourage patrons in entertainment precincts to drink responsibly, follow venue rules and comply with police directions. Officials say the measures are designed to improve public safety while allowing people to enjoy Mackay's nightlife in a safe environment.
