The Queensland Government has revealed plans for a significant redevelopment of Lang Park, also known as Suncorp Stadium, with the project set to deliver a larger capacity, cutting-edge digital screens and new entertainment facilities for sports and concert fans. The upgrade is being described as the most substantial transformation of the stadium since its major redevelopment in 2003.
Premier David Crisafulli announced the project on the eve of the Queensland State Budget, saying the venue needed to evolve to meet the demands of a growing population and an increasing number of major events. The stadium currently accommodates about 52,500 spectators and is one of Australia's premier rectangular sporting venues.
A centrepiece of the redevelopment will be the installation of a 360-degree wraparound LED ribbon board suspended from the stadium roof. The venue will also receive supersized scoreboards and two giant external media screens, each approximately the size of a tennis court, designed to improve the experience for fans arriving at the stadium.
The project will also create new terraced viewing areas behind both goalposts and dedicated entertainment precincts featuring bars, food outlets and standing-room sections. By relocating existing screen infrastructure, planners expect to increase the venue's capacity by approximately 1,000 spectators.
The stadium hosts some of Queensland's biggest sporting events, including State of Origin, NRL matches, international football fixtures and major concerts. It is also expected to play a key role during the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the lead-up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Acting Sports Minister Andrew Powell said the improvements would help ensure the venue remains a world-class destination capable of attracting major international events and delivering a premium experience for spectators.
The upgrade has also received strong support from sporting organisations. Brisbane Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy welcomed the investment, saying supporters deserve a modern stadium experience that matches the quality of events hosted at the venue.
Design work is already underway, with the project expected to proceed to tender once planning is completed. Construction is anticipated to begin later in 2026. Funding will come from the Queensland Government's Legacy Fund, although the final project cost has not yet been disclosed.
Officials believe the redevelopment will strengthen Brisbane's reputation as a destination for major sporting and entertainment events while ensuring Lang Park remains one of Australia's leading stadiums for decades to come.
