Two men have been charged following an alleged carjacking at Mount Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, which triggered a lengthy police pursuit through the region and into the Ipswich area. The incident was reported on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, after police alleged that a 55-year-old man was threatened with a knife and forced to hand over his vehicle keys at a shopping centre.
Police said the incident occurred on David Low Way at Mount Coolum shortly before 6:30pm on Monday, 5 October. A man allegedly approached the 55-year-old victim while armed with a knife and demanded his car keys. The victim complied, and the alleged offender then drove away in the vehicle.
Queensland Police launched an investigation and began tracking the allegedly stolen vehicle. Police helicopter Pol Air assisted officers in following the vehicle as it travelled south from the Sunshine Coast. The pursuit continued for approximately 160 kilometres, passing through Brisbane and towards Ipswich.
As officers continued monitoring the vehicle, police deployed a tyre-deflation device at Ebbw Vale at about 8:23pm. The measure was intended to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop by damaging its tyres. Despite the intervention, police allege that the vehicle continued towards Bundamba before eventually being abandoned on Naomi Street.
The driver allegedly fled from the abandoned vehicle on foot. Police officers searched the surrounding area and arrested a 26-year-old Mount Coolum man a short distance away. He was subsequently charged with armed robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
A second man was also arrested after police located him near the abandoned vehicle. The 29-year-old man from Yarrabilba was allegedly inside the vehicle when police arrived. He was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and was later released on bail. He is scheduled to appear before Ipswich Magistrates Court on 20 October 2026.
The 26-year-old man was remanded in custody and was scheduled to appear before Ipswich Magistrates Court on 6 October 2026. The charges remain allegations and have not been proven in court.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery and vehicle theft. Investigators are also interested in information from members of the public who may have witnessed the incident at Mount Coolum or seen the vehicle during the subsequent journey towards Ipswich.
The incident demonstrates the significant resources that can be deployed when an allegedly stolen vehicle is involved in a serious offence. Police helicopter assistance, ground units and tyre-deflation technology were used during the pursuit before the vehicle was ultimately abandoned.
Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to contact Queensland Police or Crime Stoppers. Members of the public with dashcam footage or other information that could help investigators are also being encouraged to come forward.
