Queensland Police have charged a 34-year-old man with 20 offences following a major investigation into an alleged kidnapping and domestic violence incident in Far North Queensland. The case involves allegations of repeated assaults, threats involving firearms and the unlawful detention of a woman over several days.

According to Queensland Police, the accused man, Ryan Symonds, from Feluga, was arrested after officers conducted a search operation and appealed to the public for information about his whereabouts.

Police allege that the incidents began on 26 October 2026 at an address in Feluga, on the Cassowary Coast. The man allegedly threatened a woman known to him with a firearm before assaulting her and forcing her into a vehicle. Investigators allege that he subsequently drove her to an address in Tully, where she was left.

Authorities allege that another incident occurred on 30 October at an address in Aloomba, in the Cairns region. The woman was allegedly forced into a vehicle again, and police believe she was subjected to further assaults and threats while being held against her will.

The investigation intensified after the woman managed to escape on the morning of 31 October. She reportedly flagged down a marked police vehicle and sought assistance. Officers subsequently began efforts to locate the accused man and ensure the woman's safety.

Detective Inspector Kevin Goan of the Far North District Crime Group said the woman had allegedly experienced repeated assaults over several days. Police also confirmed that support was being provided to the woman through relevant agencies.

During the investigation, officers received information from members of the public that helped them establish the man's possible location. On Monday, 2 November, specialist police located and arrested him on Mossman-Daintree Road at Miallo, north of Port Douglas.

Police allege that the man was carrying a sawn-off shotgun when he was arrested. Ammunition and other items were also reportedly located during the investigation. Officers had previously searched an address in Mount Molloy, where they allegedly discovered several firearms, including a semiautomatic rifle.

The 34-year-old has been charged with 20 offences. These include two counts of deprivation of liberty, two counts of choking, suffocation or strangulation in a domestic relationship, assault-related offences, coercive control, dangerous conduct with a weapon and torture as a domestic violence offence. Additional charges relate to weapons, explosives, motor vehicles and other alleged offences.

The accused was expected to appear at Cairns Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 3 November 2026. According to subsequent court reporting, he pleaded guilty to three failure-to-appear charges but did not enter pleas on the remaining 17 charges. He did not apply for bail.

The domestic violence and other matters are scheduled for further court proceedings on 12 January 2027.

Queensland Police have acknowledged the assistance provided by members of the public during the search operation. The investigation highlights the seriousness of domestic violence allegations and the importance of responding quickly when someone is reported missing or at risk.
