A man has died following a house fire in Bexley North, in Sydney’s south, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Emergency services were called to Handley Avenue at approximately 12:50 pm on Saturday, 10 October, after reports of a fire at a residential property. Officers from St George Police Area Command attended and found the house well alight.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked to extinguish the blaze. After bringing the fire under control, firefighters located the body of a man inside the house. Police believe the man was in his 70s, but his identity had not been formally confirmed in the initial statement.

A crime scene was established as investigators began examining what had happened. Authorities have not yet confirmed how the fire started, whether a smoke alarm was operating, or whether any other people were inside the property when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain under investigation. It would be premature to describe the incident as suspicious or to attribute the fire to a particular cause before investigators have established the facts.

A report will be prepared for the NSW Coroner, who will consider the available evidence relating to the death. The coronial process can help establish the identity of the deceased and the medical and surrounding circumstances of the death.

Police have appealed to members of the public who may have information about the incident to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in any relevant CCTV recordings or dashcam footage that may show activity around Handley Avenue before or during the fire.

Anyone with information can contact St George Police Area Command or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website.

The incident is a reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of residential fires. Authorities have not yet released any confirmed findings about the cause, and further details will depend on the progress of the investigation.
