A man in his 30s has died following a serious single-vehicle road accident near Jericho in central Queensland. Queensland Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident, which occurred on the Capricorn Highway during the night.

According to initial police information, the vehicle involved was a utility vehicle, commonly known as a ute. It was travelling east along the Capricorn Highway at approximately 11:45 pm when it rolled. The incident happened around 20 kilometres west of Jericho.

Emergency services responded to the incident after the vehicle rolled on the highway. When officers arrived, the driver, a man in his 30s, had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Despite the emergency response, his life could not be saved.

A second man, believed to be in his 20s, was travelling as a passenger in the vehicle. He survived the accident but sustained injuries that required medical attention. Emergency personnel transported him to hospital for further treatment. Police reported that his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The accident has prompted an investigation by Queensland Police to establish exactly what happened before the vehicle overturned. Investigators will examine the circumstances surrounding the journey, the vehicle's movements and any other available evidence that could help explain how the crash occurred.

At this stage, authorities have not publicly confirmed what caused the ute to roll. There has also been no official confirmation of whether speed, driver fatigue, road conditions, mechanical problems or another factor contributed to the incident. Police investigations will be important in determining whether any of these circumstances played a role.

The Capricorn Highway is an important transport route in central Queensland, connecting regional communities and supporting travel, agricultural activities and commercial transport. Road incidents along regional highways can create significant challenges for emergency responders because accident locations may be some distance from major towns and medical facilities.

The latest incident is another reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly when travelling at night. Drivers are encouraged to maintain safe speeds, remain alert, wear seatbelts and take breaks when feeling tired. Passengers should also ensure that appropriate safety measures are followed during every journey.
