A 20-year-old man remains in critical but stable condition in hospital following an alleged assault in Wollongong in the early hours of Sunday, 30 August 2026. NSW Police are continuing their investigation and have appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or captured relevant footage.

Emergency services were called to a fast-food restaurant near the intersection of Burelli Street and Corrimal Street, Wollongong, shortly after 4:20am following reports of an assault. Police officers from the Wollongong Police District attended the scene alongside paramedics.

The injured 20-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene. He had sustained serious head injuries and was subsequently transported to Wollongong Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Following the incident, Wollongong Police District detectives commenced an investigation under Strike Force Zantel. The investigation is focused on establishing exactly what happened during the alleged assault and identifying any other people who may have been involved.

Later that same evening, at approximately 7:45pm, another 20-year-old man attended Wollongong Police Station. Police arrested him and subsequently charged him with reckless grievous bodily harm. The charge relates to the alleged assault and the serious injuries suffered by the victim.

The accused man was initially refused bail. He subsequently appeared before a court on 1 September 2026, where he was granted conditional bail. He is due to return to court on 16 September 2026.

Police have continued their inquiries since the alleged assault and have released CCTV images of people who were in the area around the time of the incident. Investigators believe some of the people captured in the footage may be able to provide information that could assist with establishing the circumstances of the alleged assault.

Detectives are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was near the fast-food restaurant and the intersection of Burelli and Corrimal streets during the early hours of 30 August. People who were driving through the area may also have relevant dashcam footage.

The investigation remains active, and police are encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident, saw suspicious activity or has relevant CCTV, mobile-phone or dashcam footage to contact Wollongong Police or Crime Stoppers.

The case is now progressing through the NSW court system. The accused man's charge remains an allegation, and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.

Police have not indicated that the investigation has concluded, and further developments could follow as detectives review CCTV footage, speak with witnesses and assess other evidence connected with the alleged assault.

The incident has highlighted the importance of witnesses and available surveillance footage in investigations involving serious assaults, particularly where investigators are working to establish the sequence of events during the early hours of the morning.
