The Marong Football Netball Club has received overwhelming support from its members to pursue entry into the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) from the 2027 season, with a formal vote endorsing the club's proposed transition.
Club officials described the result as a major milestone in Marong's long-term strategic planning. The vote gives the club a mandate to continue preparing and submitting a formal application to the BFNL and the relevant football authorities for consideration ahead of the 2027 season.
Marong currently competes in the Loddon Valley Football Netball League (LVFNL), where it has enjoyed strong performances in recent seasons. However, club leaders believe a move to the BFNL would provide greater opportunities for player development, improved competition standards, and long-term sustainability across both football and netball programs.
The proposed move has been under discussion for some time, with administrators consulting members, volunteers, players, coaches, and sponsors before putting the proposal to a vote. The strong level of member support demonstrates confidence in the club's vision and its ability to compete at a higher level.
Officials have indicated that joining the BFNL would expose Marong's teams to stronger opposition while creating additional opportunities for junior athletes to develop within a larger and more competitive league structure. They also believe the move would strengthen the club's commercial appeal, helping attract sponsors, volunteers, and talented players.
Although members have endorsed the proposal, the transfer is not yet guaranteed. The application must still be assessed and approved through the appropriate AFL Victoria processes, as well as by the Bendigo Football Netball League and other governing bodies. These organisations will consider factors such as competition balance, financial sustainability, travel requirements, facilities, and the overall impact on existing leagues before making a final decision.
The Panthers have continued investing in facilities, coaching programs, and community participation, positioning themselves as a club capable of competing at a higher standard. Club leaders believe these improvements strengthen their case for admission into the BFNL.
Supporters of the proposal say the move would provide exciting new rivalries and increase exposure for players and members while helping secure the club's future. They also view the transition as an opportunity to continue building participation across all age groups and strengthen Marong's presence within the Bendigo sporting community.
If approved, Marong would become one of the newest clubs in the BFNL from the 2027 season, representing a significant milestone in the club's history. Until then, the Panthers remain focused on their current competitions while preparing the necessary documentation and meeting league requirements as part of the application process.
