A man has died and two other people are fighting for their lives after a suspicious house fire destroyed a home at Hope Island on the Gold Coast late on the night of 30 June 2026. Police are investigating the incident as a suspected arson and are examining whether the fire may be linked to a domestic violence incident.
Emergency services were called to a property on Sickle Avenue shortly before 11:45 pm after multiple reports of a house engulfed in flames. Five people were inside the home when the fire broke out. According to police, two residents noticed smoke coming from a locked ground-floor bedroom and attempted to force entry to rescue the occupant.
A 44-year-old man and an 84-year-old man suffered severe burns while trying to reach the locked room. Both were transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Police later located a body inside the bedroom where the fire is believed to have started, although formal identification was still pending at the time of the initial investigation.
Two other occupants escaped by jumping from an upstairs balcony as the fire rapidly spread through the home. A 59-year-old woman sustained back injuries and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, while another 38-year-old man escaped without physical injuries. Neighbours rushed to assist those trapped, with several helping rescue the elderly man from the garage before firefighters arrived. Witnesses described hearing screams before seeing flames engulf the property.
Queensland Police Detective Superintendent Chris Ahearn said investigators are examining several lines of inquiry to determine how the fire began. Police believe the fire originated in the locked bedroom and are investigating whether the bedroom occupant may have started the blaze. The property was extensively damaged, requiring five fire crews working for about two hours to extinguish the fire.
Investigators also confirmed officers had attended the property about a week earlier following a domestic disturbance and that a domestic violence protection order had been issued. Police stressed that the order did not prevent the people involved from continuing to live at the address. Authorities said it was too early to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the fatal fire, and forensic specialists continued examining the scene.
Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who has CCTV or dashcam footage from Sickle Avenue around the time of the fire to contact investigators. The incident remains under active investigation while authorities work to determine the exact cause of the blaze and formally identify the deceased.
