Emergency services are working to rescue a person who became trapped inside a grain silo at a Grain Corp facility in Dunolly, in central Victoria, on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the facility on Thompson Street shortly before 3:30pm after reports that a person had become trapped inside the silo. Multiple Country Fire Authority (CFA) units and Fire Rescue Victoria crews responded to the incident and began working to free the person.

Ambulance Victoria also attended the scene, with paramedics treating one person. An air ambulance was deployed as emergency services continued the rescue operation. At the latest update, the incident was still ongoing and authorities had not released detailed information about the person's condition.

Work Safe Victoria was notified of the incident and sent investigators and inspectors to the site. The workplace safety authority's involvement reflects the seriousness of an incident involving a person becoming trapped in industrial equipment at a grain-handling facility.

Grain Corp confirmed that an incident had occurred at its Dunolly site and said it was working closely with emergency services. The company said its immediate priority was the safety and welfare of the individual involved while the emergency response continued.

The incident prompted a significant emergency response in the regional Victorian town. Emergency services had to coordinate specialist rescue resources because grain silos and other confined industrial spaces can present difficult conditions for rescuers. The Victorian emergency incident register listed a confined-space rescue operation at Thompson Street in Dunolly, with CFA and other emergency resources responding.

Dunolly is located in central Victoria, north of Maryborough, and the Grain Corp facility is part of the region's agricultural infrastructure. Grain storage facilities are important to farming communities, but work around silos can involve serious workplace hazards, particularly when people become trapped within confined areas.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person involved or provided further information about how they became trapped. The rescue operation remained active as emergency crews worked at the facility.

Further information about the person's condition and the circumstances surrounding the incident is expected once emergency services complete their response and authorities are able to provide an update.

At this stage, the focus remains on safely freeing the trapped person and providing medical assistance. Work Safe Victoria is also expected to assess the circumstances of the workplace incident as part of its investigation.
