Queensland Police have launched an investigation into the suspicious death of a man whose body was discovered near a walking track in Maryborough West on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to Slaughterhouse Road, near the Maryborough cemetery, at about 6:50am on 7 October 2026 after a member of the public discovered an unresponsive man in an area off the walking track. Police attended the scene and the man was subsequently declared deceased.

The deceased man is believed to be in his 40s, although police have not yet formally confirmed his identity. Detectives are working to establish both the man's identity and the circumstances leading to his death.

Detective Acting Inspector Cameron Schneider said police were treating the death as unexplained, with investigators examining the location and gathering information that could help establish what happened before the man's death. Police have confirmed that there were injuries to the man's body, but investigators have not released details about those injuries while forensic examinations continue.

A crime scene has been established at the location, with local detectives, scenes-of-crime officers and scientific officers involved in the investigation. Specialist investigators from Brisbane are also expected to assist with the examination.

Police are attempting to reconstruct the man's movements before he was found. Investigators are particularly interested in information from people who may have been in the Slaughterhouse Road and Walker Street area on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

Authorities have asked members of the public who were travelling through the area to check for relevant CCTV footage or dashcam recordings. Even footage that does not appear directly connected to the incident could potentially help investigators establish the man's movements and identify people or vehicles that were nearby.

Police have also confirmed that a vehicle located at the scene is being examined as part of the investigation. At this stage, investigators have not indicated that the man's body was moved from another location. There is also no confirmed information about what the man was doing in the area before his death.

No person has been formally arrested or charged in connection with the death at this stage. Police are continuing to speak with people who may have information that could assist the investigation.

The discovery occurred while Queensland Premier David Crisafulli was in Maryborough attending a breakfast event for local victims of crime. He described the incident as deeply troubling for the small community.

Investigators are expected to await forensic and medical examinations as they work to establish the exact cause and circumstances of the man's death.

Anyone who was in the vicinity of Slaughterhouse Road or Walker Street and has relevant CCTV, security footage or dashcam video is being urged to contact Queensland Police.
