A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison after committing an armed robbery in Roma just days after being released on parole for a previous offence.

Dylan James Pearse was sentenced in the Toowoomba District Court after pleading guilty to armed robbery in company, dangerous driving and evading police.

The robbery occurred in Roma on August 31, 2025. Pearse and an accomplice allegedly approached a man who was playing basketball and initially asked him for a cigarette. The pair then threatened the man with knives and stole his vehicle.

Pearse also punched the victim before using the stolen vehicle to flee from police. The vehicle was eventually abandoned after it ran out of fuel, and Pearse was arrested on the same day.

The court heard that Pearse had been released from prison on parole only three days before the robbery. The prosecution highlighted his criminal history and described the offending as premeditated.

The defence acknowledged Pearse's history of mental health and substance-abuse problems while also pointing to family support.

The judge who sentenced Pearse had previously dealt with him and urged him to address the underlying issues contributing to his offending.
