Mount Gambier City Council has unveiled a new long-term master plan outlining six major ideas designed to reshape the city’s central business district and create a more connected, attractive and active city centre. The proposals are aimed at strengthening Mount Gambier’s role as the cultural, civic, commercial and social hub of the Limestone Coast.

One of the central themes of the plan is creating a city centre that is easier and more enjoyable for people to move around. Proposed changes include improvements to pedestrian infrastructure and changes to traffic arrangements, with lower speed limits being considered in parts of the CBD.

The plan also proposes additional cycling infrastructure, giving residents and visitors more options for moving through the city without relying entirely on cars. Better connections between different parts of the CBD could make walking and cycling more appealing while improving the overall streetscape.

Another major proposal focuses on outdoor dining. The council wants to create a city centre environment where restaurants and cafes can make better use of outdoor spaces, helping encourage people to spend more time in the CBD.

Housing is also included in the vision. The master plan proposes encouraging more inner-CBD housing, potentially creating additional accommodation options close to shops, services, restaurants and public spaces.

The Cave Gardens area is another focus of the proposed transformation. The iconic Mount Gambier location could receive improvements designed to strengthen its role as an important civic, cultural and visitor destination.

The plan also includes changes to Gray Street, with improvements to pedestrian and traffic infrastructure proposed as part of a broader effort to make the CBD more welcoming and accessible.

Council says the ideas were developed following community engagement in March, which attracted more than 450 participants. The feedback indicated strong community interest in a greener, more connected and livelier city centre while retaining Mount Gambier’s distinctive character.

The proposals are not yet a final construction program. Council has not released a complete project budget because the master plan remains in the consultation stage. Residents and other community members have an opportunity to provide feedback before consultation closes on September 6.

Two broader strategies are also being developed alongside the CBD vision: a city creative economy strategy, intended to support arts, culture and events, and a city living strategy, focused on housing and accommodation.

The proposed transformation would take place gradually rather than through one large redevelopment project. The final priorities, funding arrangements and implementation schedule will depend on the consultation process and future council decisions.

For Mount Gambier, the master plan represents a long-term attempt to modernise the CBD while protecting the qualities that make the regional city distinctive.
