A six-year-old boy from Townsville has been described as a “hero” after saving his younger sisters from a fast-moving house fire that broke out in their family home, believed to have been caused by a faulty clothes dryer.

The fire occurred at a residence in Grosvenor Street, Gulliver, in the evening when the family was inside the home. According to reports, the blaze began in the laundry area and spread rapidly, filling the house with thick smoke within minutes.

At the time of the fire, the children’s mother had been at home with her four children. The situation escalated quickly when smoke began spreading through the house, forcing the children into urgent action to escape danger.

The six-year-old boy, identified as Harvey Brunner, is reported to have taken immediate steps to help his siblings. Despite his young age, he assisted his 11-year-old and 3-year-old sisters, helping guide them out of the smoke-filled house and towards safety at a neighbouring property.

One of the children was reportedly asleep upstairs and unwell at the time, adding further urgency to the rescue. The boy’s actions ensured all siblings were able to escape the burning home before emergency services arrived.

Their mother, Kylie Adams, described the terrifying speed at which the fire developed. She said the fire started suddenly in the laundry and quickly intensified, with smoke becoming so thick that visibility inside the house was severely reduced within moments. She managed to reach the laundry area but found the dryer still burning as the fire spread uncontrollably.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the fire broke out. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, while a nearby fitness instructor reportedly rushed to assist after hearing calls for help. Neighbours also played a role in helping the family reach safety.

Authorities believe the fire was caused by a malfunctioning clothes dryer, a reminder of the risks associated with household appliances when they overheat or are not properly maintained.

Ms Adams expressed immense pride in her son’s actions, saying she was deeply moved by his quick thinking and bravery under extreme pressure. She also praised the people in the neighbourhood who assisted during the emergency response.

While the home suffered damage in the fire, all family members survived, largely due to the rapid response from both the children and emergency services.

The incident has drawn attention to fire safety awareness in households, particularly around laundry appliances such as dryers, which can pose a fire risk if faulty or improperly used.

Investigations and assessments of the damage are expected to continue, but the focus for the family remains on recovery after what was described as a frightening and fast-moving emergency.
