Three people were injured after a four-wheel-drive vehicle crashed into the front of the Shearwater Food Company café in northern Tasmania, causing extensive damage to the building. Two of the injured people remained in hospital with serious injuries, according to the latest published report on 12 October. The crash happened on Club Drive in Shearwater, a coastal community near Devonport. Police were called at approximately 6:45 pm on Sunday, 11 October, after the vehicle struck the café while apparently manoeuvring to park outside.
Two people were seated outside the business when the vehicle crossed the footpath and hit the building. A staff member inside the café was also injured. The impact smashed through the front of the premises and damaged the interior, leaving the business with significant structural and property damage.
Tasmania Police said a 26-year-old woman was taken to Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries. A 60-year-old man was transported to the North West Regional Hospital, treated and later released. The staff member was also taken to the North West Regional Hospital and remained there with serious but stable injuries.
There were two people inside the four-wheel-drive vehicle. The male driver received treatment from paramedics at the scene but did not require hospitalisation. The passenger sustained minor injuries.
One café customer described narrowly escaping being struck by the vehicle. She said she had been sitting at a table near the entrance when she heard tyres screeching. When she turned, the vehicle was coming through the glass frontage and missed her by inches. She said the incident happened very quickly and left her in shock.
Police Inspector Michelle Elmer said initial investigations suggested the vehicle had been involved in a parking manoeuvre before it crossed the footpath. Although the vehicle was not travelling at normal road speed, the impact was still forceful enough to injure people and damage the building.
Investigators said there was no initial indication that the driver had deliberately driven into the café. However, the exact circumstances and cause of the crash remained under investigation, and police had not announced any charges in the report.
Police are seeking information from anyone who witnessed the incident or was at the café around the time of the collision. Witness accounts may help investigators establish what happened before the vehicle struck the premises.
The incident highlights the potential danger of vehicle movements in areas where pedestrians are seated close to parking spaces and shopfronts. The investigation remains ongoing, and further conclusions about the cause should await police findings.
