The City of Gold Coast has announced a major safety overhaul for Hedges Avenue — often referred to as the Gold Coast’s “Millionaire’s Row” due to its luxury beachfront homes. Under the proposed changes, sections of the popular coastal road in Mermaid Beach will become a low-speed “cycle street” with local-access traffic restrictions expected to reduce vehicle volumes by up to 80 per cent. The project follows increasing incidents involving motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in the busy beachfront precinct. Planned works include upgraded footpaths and kerbs, road pavement renewal, and underground infrastructure improvements alongside the development of the city’s broader Oceanway coastal pathway network. Tom Tate said the project prioritises community safety and will improve movement through the Mermaid Beach area. Construction is expected to begin after the Gold Coast Marathon in July, with detailed plans to be released in early July.
