Brisbane's Metro network is set for further expansion after Brisbane City Council allocated $38 million towards early works for the next stage of the city's high-frequency public transport system.

The funding follows the development of a business case examining possible future Metro connections across Brisbane. The business case is expected to be completed by August 2027 and is being jointly funded by the federal government, Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council.

The proposed expansion is looking at several major corridors, including connections towards Brisbane Airport, Carseldine, Capalaba and Springwood. The long-term objective is to create a larger high-capacity public transport network capable of supporting Brisbane's continued population growth.

Council's decision comes as existing Metro services experience significantly increased passenger demand. Usage has grown strongly following changes to public transport fares and improvements in service levels, particularly during evenings and weekends.

The increased demand has strengthened the case for expanding the Metro network. Council and transport advocates argue that additional high-frequency services will be important as Brisbane continues to grow and more people rely on public transport.

The current funding is focused on early-stage work rather than full construction. A completed business case will be needed before the larger expansion can proceed, and additional federal funding will be required for the construction phase.

The business case is expected to examine the most appropriate routes, infrastructure requirements, costs and staging options for future Metro services.

Rather than building every proposed connection at once, the expansion is expected to be considered in stages. Short-, medium- and longer-term services could be introduced depending on demand, funding and the outcome of the planning process.

The potential connections would extend the reach of Brisbane's high-frequency public transport network well beyond its current corridors.

A connection towards Brisbane Airport could provide an additional public transport option for one of the city's most important employment and visitor destinations. Airport connectivity is particularly important because Brisbane continues to experience strong growth in tourism, business travel and major events.

A future connection towards Carseldine could improve public transport access for northern Brisbane communities, while proposed services towards Capalaba and Springwood would strengthen connections in the city's east and south.

The expansion is also being considered in the context of Brisbane's expected growth beyond 2031. Transport planners are looking at how infrastructure can keep pace with increasing demand rather than waiting until existing roads and public transport services become heavily congested.

Metro services are designed to provide frequent and reliable travel between major centres. Expanding the system could give more residents an alternative to driving, particularly for regular journeys into major employment and activity areas.

The recent increase in Metro usage provides further evidence of demand for frequent public transport. Weekend and late-night passenger numbers have increased significantly on existing services, indicating that residents are using public transport for a wider range of trips.

For Brisbane's future transport network, the expansion represents a major long-term planning opportunity. However, the proposed routes are not yet a fully funded construction program.

The next major step will be completing the business case. This will help determine which routes should receive priority and how the network can be expanded most effectively.

The $38 million allocation therefore represents the beginning of the next stage rather than the completion of the expansion itself.

If the business case supports the proposed expansion and additional funding is secured, construction could eventually extend Brisbane Metro to several new parts of the city.

For commuters, the potential expansion could mean more frequent services, better connections between suburbs and major centres, and greater choice between public transport and private vehicles.

For Brisbane, the project forms part of a broader effort to prepare the city's transport system for future population and economic growth.

The proposed expansion towards the airport, Carseldine, Capalaba and Springwood could significantly increase the geographical reach of the Metro network if the plans eventually proceed.

For now, council's $38 million commitment will support the early planning and business-case work needed to determine the project's next steps.
