Two Charged After Police Seize Drugs, Weapons and Stolen Car in Aspley - Brisbane, QLD
Smart summary
A police investigation in Brisbane has led to more than 50 charges against two people after officers allegedly found drugs, weapons, false numberplates and a stolen vehicle.
Two people have been charged with more than 50 offences following a police operation in Brisbane's northern suburb of Aspley.
Queensland Police said officers from the Boondall Tactical Crime Squad were conducting investigations when they allegedly spotted a grey Mazda 3 displaying a false Victorian registration plate at a shopping centre near Gympie Road in Aspley on August 17.
Police later located the two occupants of the vehicle, a 21-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man, both from Deception Bay.
A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered approximately 166 grams of methylamphetamine, a homemade taser and a knife. Police also reported finding several false numberplates and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.
Further police inquiries allegedly established that the Mazda had previously been reported stolen from an address in Springwood on May 19.
Both occupants were taken into custody at the scene. Police said the pair were also wanted on multiple warrants relating to alleged offences involving firearms, dangerous drugs and other matters.
The 27-year-old man faces 33 charges. These include alleged unlawful possession of several weapons, possession of dangerous drugs, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing and possession of a knife in a public place, along with other alleged offences.
The 21-year-old woman faces 24 charges. Her charges include alleged unlawful possession of weapons, fraud, possession of dangerous drugs, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of a knife in a public place and driving-related offences.
Both people were scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 18.
The police operation forms part of ongoing investigations by Brisbane officers into suspected weapons, drug and property offences.
The discovery of the allegedly stolen Mazda added another element to the investigation. Police said the vehicle had been reported stolen from Springwood several months earlier and was being driven with a false Victorian registration plate when officers allegedly identified it in Aspley.
False registration plates can make it more difficult for police and members of the public to identify vehicles correctly and can be used in attempts to conceal a vehicle's identity.
Police also alleged that multiple false numberplates were found inside the Mazda, together with drug-related equipment.
The alleged seizure of methylamphetamine and weapons means the investigation involves several categories of offences rather than a single suspected crime.
The charges include offences relating to dangerous drugs, weapons, vehicles, property and fraud.
The court proceedings will now determine how the allegations progress. Being charged does not establish guilt, and the allegations will be dealt with through the Queensland court system.
The case demonstrates the role of targeted police squads in investigating suspected organised or repeat offending across Brisbane.
Officers from the Boondall Tactical Crime Squad were involved in identifying the vehicle and locating its occupants. Brisbane City Tactical Crime Squad officers were also involved in inquiries connected with the pair, according to police.
The investigation remains linked to multiple alleged offences and warrants.
Police have asked anyone with relevant information to provide it through Policelink. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers Queensland.
For the Brisbane community, the investigation highlights the continuing police focus on suspected drug trafficking, illegal weapons possession and stolen vehicles.
The two accused people are due to face Brisbane Magistrates Court as the legal process begins.
The investigation and court proceedings will determine the outcome of the allegations and the charges brought against each person.
