Tributes have poured in following the death of Robert Gerald "Gerry" Bell, a highly respected businessman, surveyor, philanthropist and long-time Caloundra resident who passed away on 25 June 2026 at the age of 93. Family, friends and community leaders have praised Bell's lifelong dedication to the Sunshine Coast, describing him as one of the region's quiet achievers whose influence will be felt for generations.
The news of Bell's passing was shared by his sons, Peter and Marcus Bell, who reflected on their father's deep love for Caloundra and his unwavering commitment to community life. Peter Bell said his father remained active in local events until shortly before his death and believed he belonged to the generation that helped lay the foundations of the modern Sunshine Coast.
Bell enjoyed a distinguished career as a licensed surveyor, playing a significant role in shaping parts of southeast Queensland during decades of rapid growth. Among his notable projects was surveying the site of Caloundra State High School in the early 1960s. His professional work contributed to the development of roads, public facilities and residential areas that supported the region's expansion. A street in Golden Beach also bears the Bell family name in recognition of their longstanding connection to the area.
Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, led public tributes, describing Bell as a humble, generous and deeply respected member of the community. Wallace said Bell's impact extended far beyond his business career, highlighting his quiet support for local organisations, charitable projects and countless community initiatives over many decades. He said Bell remained engaged, sharp and full of humour throughout his later years, leaving behind a legacy of service and generosity.
Bell was also recognised for his long association with community organisations. He served as a charter secretary of the Lions Club of Caloundra and was awarded life membership in recognition of his decades of volunteer service. Friends remembered him as someone who always gave his time willingly and worked behind the scenes to improve life for others without seeking recognition.
Many tributes described Bell as a devoted family man and a man of strong Christian faith who consistently placed community service at the centre of his life. Those who knew him said his willingness to mentor others, support charitable causes and contribute to regional development earned him enormous respect across the Sunshine Coast.
A funeral service celebrating Bell's life will be held at Gregson & Weight in Caloundra on Monday, 6 July 2026, where family, friends and community members will gather to pay their respects. Tributes continue to be shared across social media, reflecting the lasting impact Bell had on the region through both his professional achievements and his commitment to helping others.
