Police are investigating a suspicious overnight fire in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs after two cars were reportedly set alight and the fire spread to a nearby residence in Balwyn North.

Emergency services were called to Greythorn Road at about 1am on Wednesday, 7 October, following reports that two vehicles had been set on fire. The flames subsequently spread to the adjoining or nearby residential property, causing damage to the home.

The sole occupant of the residence was inside when the incident occurred but managed to escape the property safely. Police have confirmed that the occupant was not injured in the fire.

Fire crews attended the scene and worked to contain the blaze after the two vehicles caught fire. The incident occurred during the early hours of the morning, when most residents in the area would have been asleep, creating a potentially serious risk to people inside the affected property.

Following the fire, police established a crime scene at the location as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have described the fire as suspicious, meaning investigators are considering the possibility that the vehicles may have been deliberately targeted.

At this stage, police have not publicly identified a suspect or released a confirmed motive for the incident. Investigators are examining available evidence from the scene and are seeking information from members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area around the time of the fire.

CCTV and dashcam footage could be particularly important to the investigation. Residents and motorists who travelled along Greythorn Road or nearby streets around the time of the incident may have captured people, vehicles or other activity that could assist detectives.

The fire caused damage to the residence after spreading from the burning vehicles. However, the fact that the sole occupant escaped without injury means there were no reported physical injuries associated with the incident at the time of the police investigation.

Police are continuing to investigate exactly how the vehicles caught fire and whether the incident was connected to any other criminal activity. Until investigators establish the circumstances, authorities have not confirmed that the fire was an intentional attack, despite treating it as suspicious.

Anyone with information, CCTV footage or dashcam recordings that may assist the investigation is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers. Members of the public are also advised not to approach anyone they believe may be connected to the incident and instead provide information directly to police.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further information may be released as detectives establish what happened during the early-morning incident.
