Denmark-raised artist and author Wendy Binks is showcasing her latest exhibition, Elephant Dreaming, at the Denmark Visitor Centre Gallery from 16 March to 1 May 2026. Best known for her vibrant animal paintings and children’s books including Where’s Stripey, Scrambled Eggs and Invincible Me, Wendy has turned her focus to the landscapes of her childhood in Western Australia’s Great Southern region. Inspired by places such as Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks, the exhibition features layered acrylic works that combine bold colour, gestural marks and recurring bird imagery.
Black cockatoos, spotted pardalotes and splendid fairy wrens appear throughout the series, adding movement and storytelling to depictions of granite boulders, sea and sky. Wendy says the exhibition explores how landscapes can carry personality and memory, describing the rocks as “sleeping giants” and ancient creatures resting in the tide. Raised on a dairy farm near Denmark, Wendy credits her father, Laurie Binks, and his interest in wildlife for nurturing her fascination with Australian animals.
After studying art and design at Curtin University, she founded Stunned Emu Designs in Fremantle and built a successful career as an illustrator, painter and children’s author. Through Elephant Dreaming, Wendy hopes visitors reconnect with the awe and emotional power of the coastline, evoking memories of sun-warmed granite, still water and birds crossing the evening sky. The exhibition will be the final show hosted at the Denmark Visitor Centre Gallery under its current management.
