Police have arrested and charged an 18-year-old man following an alleged attempted abduction of a young girl in Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly before 7:30pm on Monday, 5 October, when a couple and a small child were walking along Niven Drive in Paralowie. Police allege that an unknown man approached the child, picked her up and carried her a short distance before putting her down again. The man was then last seen in the nearby Marvin Way area.

The incident prompted an investigation by detectives, who worked to identify the person allegedly involved. Following inquiries, police arrested an 18-year-old man from Paralowie.

The man has been charged with abduction of a child. Police refused him bail, and he was scheduled to appear before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 7 October.

Further details reported about the incident indicate that members of the public may have intervened during the alleged encounter. The circumstances surrounding exactly what happened before and after the child was released remain part of the investigation.

The alleged incident has raised concerns among local residents and families in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, particularly because it occurred while the child was walking with family members in a residential area. Authorities are urging members of the community to remain alert and to report suspicious behaviour or information that could assist investigators.

Police have confirmed that the arrest followed investigative work into the Monday evening incident. At this stage, the allegations against the accused have not been tested in court.

The case will now proceed through the South Australian court system. The accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Parents and carers are also being encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings when walking with children, particularly in public areas, while avoiding speculation about the case or identifying people who have not been officially connected to the investigation.
