Tasmanian Police are investigating after a body was discovered in Humphreys Rivulet at Glenorchy, in Hobart’s northern suburbs, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Police were contacted at about 10:30am after a person walking near Grove Road reported seeing a deceased person in the water. Emergency services attended the area, and detectives and specialist police resources were deployed to the scene.

The section around the rivulet was closed while investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the death. Police also asked members of the public to avoid the area while the investigation was underway.

The discovery prompted a police operation in and around the waterway as investigators worked to establish what had happened. Officers conducted inquiries at the scene and gathered information that could assist with identifying the circumstances of the death.

Tasmania Police said preliminary investigations did not indicate any suspicious circumstances at this stage. However, the investigation remains ongoing and an autopsy will be conducted as part of the process of determining the cause and circumstances of the death.

Police have not publicly released the identity of the deceased person.

Authorities are treating the death as an investigation rather than reporting it as a suspected criminal incident. The absence of suspicious circumstances in the preliminary assessment does not mean the investigation has concluded, with police continuing to examine available evidence and awaiting the results of the autopsy.

The incident occurred near Grove Road in Glenorchy, an established northern suburb of Hobart. The area around the rivulet was temporarily restricted while police and specialist resources worked at the scene.
