A new winter festival is being planned for Byron Bay, with Destination Byron seeking a creative, branding or marketing agency to help develop the identity of the proposed Byron Fest 2027.

The planned festival is intended to showcase some of the characteristics that have made Byron Bay a major tourism destination, including arts, culture, food, wellness, sustainability and entrepreneurship.

Destination Byron, an industry-led volunteer organisation, has secured funding through NSW Government initiatives to establish the festival and encourage greater visitation during the winter period.

The organisation is now inviting agencies across Australia to express interest in helping develop the festival's branding and marketing strategy. Expressions of interest are due to close on 14 August 2026.

The proposed event is intended to create a new reason for visitors to travel to Byron Bay outside the region's busiest tourism periods. By establishing a winter festival, organisers hope to increase overnight stays and economic activity for local businesses.

Tourism is an important part of the Byron Bay economy, supporting accommodation providers, restaurants, cafes, retailers, tourism operators and creative businesses. A new festival could therefore provide opportunities for a wide range of local businesses.

The festival concept is also designed around Byron Shire's broader identity. Rather than focusing on a single type of entertainment, Byron Fest is expected to incorporate several aspects of the region's culture and lifestyle.

Arts and creative activities could form an important part of the event, while food and wellness would reflect sectors that are strongly associated with Byron Bay.

Sustainability is another proposed theme. Byron Bay and the wider Northern Rivers region have increasingly focused on environmental issues, and organisers want the festival brand to reflect the area's local character.

Destination Byron has acknowledged that its project budget for the branding work is limited. Agencies willing to contribute some services on a pro-bono or reduced-fee basis are therefore being encouraged to apply.

The organisation says the project provides an opportunity for an agency to contribute to a festival with potential long-term community and tourism benefits.

If successfully developed, Byron Fest could become a recurring winter event and form part of the region's annual tourism calendar.

The proposal comes as Byron Bay continues to balance its popularity as an international tourism destination with the needs of its local community. Increasing visitor numbers can provide economic benefits while also creating pressure on accommodation, transport, infrastructure and local services.

A well-planned festival could help direct tourism activity towards a specific period and support businesses during winter.

The next stage will involve selecting an agency capable of developing the festival's visual identity and broader brand strategy.

The proposed Byron Fest 2027 is therefore still in its development stage rather than being an event taking place this year. The latest announcement concerns the search for a creative partner and represents a new tourism-development story for Byron Bay.
