The Coroners Court of Queensland has confirmed it will reopen the inquest into the disappearance of Jayden Penno-Tompsett after his remains were located in the north Queensland bush. Penno-Tompsett was 22 when he vanished on New Year's Eve in 2017 near Charters Towers, west of Townsville, during a road trip from Newcastle to Cairns. An earlier coronial inquest concluded that his death was not suspicious and that he was believed to have died in extreme summer conditions while affected by drugs. Human remains were discovered in October 2025 on a rural property in Breddan, close to where he was last seen. Forensic testing completed in January 2026 confirmed the remains were those of Penno-Tompsett. The court is now awaiting a report from the Queensland Police Service regarding the circumstances surrounding the discovery before further proceedings are scheduled.
