Fresh details have emerged in the prosecution of Jesse Wahlen Beale, with a Queensland court hearing that investigators have provided downloads from seven electronic devices as part of the evidence in the murder case surrounding the death of Crystal Beale.
Crystal Beale, a 49-year-old mother of two, disappeared after having dinner with her former partner on 21 February 2025. She was last seen after the pair argued in Brisbane's southern suburbs before her body was discovered in the Brisbane River at Yeronga the following morning. Seven months later, Jesse Wahlen Beale was charged with domestic violence-related murder and interfering with a corpse. He has pleaded not guilty, and the matter is awaiting trial.
During a recent pre-trial hearing, the court was told investigators had supplied the defence with downloads from seven electronic devices, including mobile phones and other digital devices examined during the lengthy police investigation. The material forms part of the extensive electronic evidence expected to feature prominently when the case proceeds to trial. Prosecutors and defence lawyers are continuing to review the digital evidence as part of the disclosure process.
The prosecution alleges Crystal Beale was killed after confronting her former partner over photographs allegedly found on his device. Crown prosecutors claim the images depicted her unconscious while being sexually assaulted, and that she threatened to expose him before her disappearance. Prosecutors further allege Jesse Beale later attempted to conceal the crime by disposing of her body in the Brisbane River. He denies the allegations.
Earlier court proceedings heard police rely on a combination of CCTV footage, internet search history, phone records and forensic evidence. Prosecutors allege Jesse Beale searched for Brisbane River tide times, nearby CCTV camera locations and methods of concealing browsing history following Crystal's disappearance. The defence disputes the significance of those searches and maintains the prosecution case is entirely circumstantial.
The cause of Crystal Beale's death remains a contested issue. Previous hearings heard expert evidence that drowning could not be completely excluded, while prosecutors rely on evidence of neck injuries they say are consistent with strangulation or suffocation. Defence lawyers argue the uncertainty surrounding the exact cause of death weakens the prosecution case, although the Supreme Court has twice refused Jesse Beale's applications for bail.
The latest hearing focused primarily on case management rather than the merits of the allegations. With a large volume of electronic evidence now exchanged, both sides are continuing to prepare for what is expected to be a lengthy trial. Earlier proceedings indicated the matter is unlikely to be heard until 2028 because of the complexity of the case and the amount of forensic and digital material involved.
The case remains before the courts. Jesse Wahlen Beale has been charged but has not been convicted, and the allegations against him have not yet been determined by a jury.
