Australia is set to experience its first north-west cloudband (NWCB) of 2026, a significant weather system that stretches thousands of kilometres and delivers extensive rainfall across the continent. The cloudband is forecast to draw tropical moisture from north-western Australia and spread rain through inland regions, reaching as far south as Tasmania. NWCBs are a vital source of cool-season rainfall and can account for up to 90 per cent of inland winter rain. The development comes as welcome news following the driest April in eight years, raising hopes for drought relief despite concerns over a dry seasonal outlook and the possible return of El Niño later in 2026.
