A fatal stabbing in Melbourne's central business district has prompted renewed concerns about public safety after a food delivery rider died following an altercation near Queen Victoria Market.

The victim was identified as 47-year-old Jianming Feng, who worked as a food delivery rider in Melbourne. The incident occurred on Friday evening, 6 November, with police and emergency services responding shortly after 8pm to reports of a stabbing on Frederick Way.

According to Victoria Police, two food delivery riders reportedly noticed a man tampering with their bicycles. The riders approached the individual, leading to an altercation. During the confrontation, one of the delivery riders was stabbed and sustained fatal injuries. A second rider, aged 34, also suffered injuries during the incident.

Emergency services attended the scene and provided medical assistance to the injured man. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Jianming Feng died at the location. The second delivery rider was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for treatment. Police later confirmed that he had been discharged after receiving medical attention.

The incident has deeply affected Melbourne's hospitality and delivery communities, where Feng was known by nearby restaurant workers. Local business owners described him as a hardworking and friendly individual who regularly visited restaurants in the area to collect food orders.

Feng's family confirmed his identity and shared their grief following his death. His daughter, who is currently in China, described him as a humble, diligent and down-to-earth person. The family is making arrangements to travel to Melbourne and is seeking assistance with the necessary visa procedures.

Police arrested a 51-year-old man from Footscray on Saturday morning in connection with the incident. He is expected to be interviewed by detectives as investigations continue. Authorities have stated that they are not currently searching for any other suspects in relation to the stabbing.

The food delivery company Hungry Panda also confirmed that Feng was one of its delivery riders. The company expressed deep sadness over his death and said it had established a dedicated response team to contact and assist his family. It also confirmed that it was cooperating with Victoria Police during the investigation.

The incident has generated concern among local residents, restaurant workers and fellow delivery riders. Floral tributes were placed near the scene, while members of the community gathered to remember Feng and express their condolences.

A vigil was organised outside Melbourne's State Library to honour his memory. Community members used the gathering to remember his contribution and call for improved safety for people working late-night delivery shifts.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The tragedy has highlighted the risks faced by delivery workers who regularly travel through busy city streets, often working during evening and late-night hours.
